2024 Solar Car Challenge Brings Fau High School Team To Texas Motor Speed Way
Advanced Green Technologies is proud to sponsor second solar car for FAU Solar Owls, a team of 26 committed students from Florida Atlantic University High School, will spend eight days in Fort Worth, Texas, racing their Four Seater Solar Cruiser, the ALSET CyberSedan. Under the guidance of adviser Allan Phipps, this event marks the team’s first participation in the Solar Car Challenge. The ALSET CyberSedan, inspired by the Tesla Cybertruck, is the first solar car of its kind at the high school or college level in Florida. The Solar Owls aim to demonstrate their engineering and innovation skills with this four-seater solar-powered commuter vehicle.
This year’s Solar Car Challenge will showcase 32 teams from 12 different states, with representation including 16 teams from Texas, four from California, two each from Kentucky and Florida, and one team each from Idaho, Maryland, Connecticut, Missouri, Oregon, Washington, Arkansas, and Michigan. Teams at various stages of development are spread across 39 states and several countries, including Canada, Mexico, Costa Rica, Puerto Rico, the Bahamas, Spain, and Singapore.
“STEM competitions like the Solar Car Challenge offer students a unique, hands-on opportunity to apply classroom lessons to real-world global issues. Projects like building a solar car enhance engineering skills and foster essential life skills such as time management, teamwork, communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and problem-solving.
Programs at The Cane Institute exemplify how hands-on, project-based STEM initiatives can help students discover their personal talents, strengths, and interests. Engaging in these activities guides students toward STEM degrees and careers, ultimately finding their own STEM identity.”
Allan Phipps, STEM Coordinator and project leader
The Solar Car Challenge goes beyond a mere competition; it’s a gathering of a community passionate about innovation. When the Solar Owls race in Fort Worth, they represent not only their school but also a vision of a sustainable future.
