In collaboration with The Haskell Company, Advanced Green Technologies (AGT) undertook the installation of a rooftop solar array at the Episcopal School of Jacksonville’s Student Life Center. This project was a significant step in supporting the school’s commitment to sustainability while also addressing energy costs through renewable sources. The initiative stands as a model for integrating solar energy in educational environments, blending innovative design with practical, real-world applications to reduce environmental impact and inspire future generations.
Project Challenge
The primary objective of this project was to create a durable and efficient solar energy system that would seamlessly integrate with the Episcopal School of Jacksonville’s new Student Life Center. AGT needed to ensure that the solar array would not only meet the school’s energy goals but also protect the integrity of the building’s new Carlisle roof. The installation required careful coordination with other trades and construction timelines, as well as adherence to strict safety and warranty preservation measures, to deliver a reliable, high-performing solar solution that would serve the school and its community for years to come.
Proposed Solution
AGT designed and executed a customized, integrated solar solution that utilized a DCE ballasted racking structure secured by 692 concrete blocks and strategically placed anchor attachments. This layout provided stability and efficiency, with minimal penetration to maintain the roof warranty. AGT employed 140 Canadian Solar 540W modules and a CHINT 60kW inverter with a Flex Gateway portal, enabling remote monitoring of energy production. This approach not only met the unique demands of the project but also allowed for an adaptable, low-maintenance energy system suited for future school facilities.
Innovation and Adaptability
The innovation in AGT’s approach lies in the adaptable design of the DCE ballasted racking system, enabling a robust yet roof-friendly installation ideal for educational settings. This design, combined with advanced monitoring capabilities, demonstrates an adaptable and efficient model for similar institutions, especially those with new construction. The customized system layout balances structural integrity with minimal disruption, making it an easily replicable solution for educational institutions or other high-use public buildings considering sustainable energy options.
Environmental impact and impact on operating expense
This 75.6 kW DC solar system is designed to generate over 2.83 GWh of clean energy throughout its 25+ year lifespan, offsetting approximately 1,977 metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions. To put this into perspective, avoiding 1,977 metric tons of CO₂ is comparable to preventing the emissions generated by burning 2,178,740 pounds of coal. Beyond the significant environmental impact, this solar system is also projected to deliver $433,508 in operating expense savings for the owner over its lifespan. These savings can be redirected to support and enhance student education, amplifying the system’s positive community impact.
Economic and Social Impact
Economically, this project positions the Episcopal School of Jacksonville as a leader in energy-efficient campus management, lowering operational costs and redirecting funds towards educational resources. Socially, it serves as an educational example for students, highlighting the importance of renewable energy and environmental responsibility. AGT’s work provides students a first hand view of sustainable technology, reinforcing the school’s commitment to a cleaner environment while fostering a community-wide understanding of renewable energy’s benefits.
Long-Term Implications
This solar installation’s long-term impact is both economic and educational. The school will benefit from consistent energy savings, reducing its carbon foot print and dependency on non-renewable energy sources. The integrated data monitoring system ensures that maintenance can be proactive and precise, minimizing system downtimes and maximizing output over its lifecycle. As educational institutions adopt renewable systems, projects like this one underscore the feasibility and benefits of green energy investments in similar sectors.
Project Execution and Unique Aspects
Scope of Work: AGT’s scope involved the complete installation of the 75.6 kW solar array, including the configuration of the racking system, module placement, inverter setup, and the integration of online monitoring.
Challenges and Solutions: AGT successfully navigated the challenge of working around multiple trades while protecting the roof warranty. The coordination was particularly intense for the inverter installation, which required collaboration with internet service providers for setup and activation. The project timeline and cost objectives were met, supported by robust planning and coordination with subcontractors and the general contractor, Haskell.
Safety Protocols: Safety was a high priority, with the team adhering to a Site-Specific Safety Plan. OSHA-certified employees employed Personal Fall Arrest Systems, guardrails, and PPE, and worked with weather monitoring to avoid hazardous conditions. Haskell provided an additional safety course, ensuring that all personnel met heightened safety standards for school environments.
Project Success and Recognition
This project exemplifies AGT’s commitment to safety, quality, and sustainability. The successful installation within budget and on schedule speaks to the team’s dedication and expertise. The project is notable for its meticulous planning and the complexity of working within a school campus while ensuring minimal disruption and strict adherence to safety standards. This project sets a high standard for renewable energy implementation in schools, and its success has established a strong case for similar solar initiatives in the educational sector.
Summary
The most rewarding aspect of the project was AGT’s contribution to a sustainable energy solution that directly benefits the students and surrounding community. Witnessing the project come to life on school grounds has been fulfilling, especially knowing it will positively impact students for years to come. This project is more than an installation; it’s a step toward a cleaner, more sustainable future that serves as an educational and environmental milestone for the school.
